Interior of the Ceremonial Hall in Nový Jičín
The Ceremonial Hall in the premises of the Nový Jičín Town Hall is the venue for the most important life events, whether it is the welcoming of citizens, marriages or other important meetings. The hall is regularly filled with the most joyful emotions. However, its appearance in the late 1960s is no longer sufficient to meet the demands of today's important representative space. Therefore, the city commissioned three architectural studios to carry out a study of its new appearance. Our design was subsequently selected for implementation.
The new form of the hall, the vestibule and the adjacent facilities is deliberately restrained so that it is above all a dignified backdrop for the events themselves. We have retained the original layout of the hall - given its orientation and proportions, the position of the altar on the axis of the longer side is logical and, if not quite ideal, at least the best possible. We have unified the flooring throughout the room to a single height level by knocking out a step below the altar, which will undoubtedly contribute to its usability for a more diverse range of occasions than was previously the case. With a few minor layout interventions, we have achieved the enlargement and lightening of the vestibule, into which several offices were originally built. We unified all the main spaces by painting with subtle hand-painted ermine and a meticulously crafted wooden floor, which replaced the original cold-looking marble tiles. We retained elements with quality and timeless details - especially the chandeliers, wall lights and doors. These have been carefully refurbished and complemented with new locksmith and joinery. New circular handles have been added to the original doors, new brass grilles have been inserted under the window sills, and the altar is also new. The motif of interlocking circles, characteristic of the events that will take place here, runs through all the new features.
Alice Svobodová and I drew up a proposal for the reconstruction of the ceremonial hall in mid-2017. Together with us, two other architectural studios were invited to submit proposals and after two rounds of evaluation, our solution was selected as the most successful. The renovation was carried out between autumn 2018 and spring 2019.
